The strength of an entrepreneurial business
A dip into history teaches us that 4 generations of a single Belgian family, the Van den Broeke, are at the core of Lutosa as a company. Since 1935, when the grandparents were active in the potato trade, little by little subsequent generations have built up this flagship of Belgian food processing. Today, from these business roots, there remains an astonishing sense of commitment and team spirit. The firm retains a family spirit, even
though it is now a member of the Canadian McCain family group, and it benefits from its competitiveness and rapid decision-making.
From our 2 production sites located in Belgium, our brand extends worldwide. Partnerships, expertise and skills on an international level lay the fertile ground for our success. We have a presence in 126 countries and are active across 3 leading sectors: commercial and group catering, large and medium-sized retail distribution and the food industry.
Lutosa achieves 92% of its sales volumes through exports. We export via 21 commercial subsidiaries and sales offices spread across 5 continents, but also via commercial agents and importers/distributors. Lutosa’s global commercial network is one of our strengths: our presence on the ground allows us to form very close relationships with our customers and to acquire a better perception of local culinary trends. We therefore participate in many trade fairs, both in Europe and worldwide
Lutosa mission
“Lutosa is a Worldwide provider of fine potato products, inspired by tradition, full of passion and respect.”
Lutosa is specialized in the development, production and marketing of four categories of products: frozen fries, frozen potato specialties, chilled fries, high-quality dehydrated potato flakes.
Lutosa is firmly anchored in the agricultural/food Belgian industry. Belgium is part of the Western European potatoes cluster, the more important and productive region for industrial production of potatoes in the world. The infrastructure, the know-how and training, the regional standards and a solid financial structure, all make of this cluster the most competitive worldwide. Lutosa is very keen to play its role and to contribute to the development of this cluster.
Lutosa is convinced that the competitive advantage is to be found in the commitment and quality of all its partners. Lutosa aims at creating an environment in which every partner, every customer and every employee can fully develop, can enjoy the company know-how and feel responsible for the good work to be done at Lutosa, everyone at his own level.
Currently, Lutosa has an annual capacity of 450 thousand tons of finished products.
Lutosa has expanded in the world gradually. Over the past three years, our products have been sold in more than 100 countries. We always look for closeness, in order to offer the best service, cooperation and support to our customers, wherever they are, at any time they need us.
Lutosa means high quality, constant support, personalized service and reliability.
The quality of the raw material determines the quality of the finished product; that's why Lutosa select with great care the potatoes intended for production.
Our company works primarily with the Bintje variety, created in the early nineteenth century in Friesland (Netherlands). The Bintje potato has a typical yellow color and lends itself perfectly for processing into frozen or dehydrated products.
Every year, we transform 750 thousand tons of potatoes. The main supply comes from the three belgian provinces known for their intense plantations of potatoes: West Flanders, East Flanders and Hainaut, but also from France, the Netherlands and Germany.
Belgium as a trademark
According to tradition, it is in Belgium that fries were invented. In the XVII century, along the Meuse, near Namur, the belgian farmers used to fry fish along the river banks. During winter, though, with a frozen river, it was impossible to fish. So, farmers started to cut potatoes into sticks, so that they seemed small fishes, and to fry them. Fries were invented. Only after the
II World War, however, this product became famous throughout the world: when American soldiers exchanged their Cokes and their chewing gums with local products, they used to receive fries. Unfortunately, this amazing discovery was made in the French-speaking south of Belgium, so they were never called Belgian fries, but "French fries".
Traditionally fried in unrefined beef fat, fries are now prepared in vegetable oils. Within Belgium, "friteries" or
"frietkot" are very common. They sell fried potatoes on the streets. Young people and adults can enjoy them in the typical paper cones, combined with a sauce.
It is also thanks to this brand of excellence that Lutosa has an excellent collaboration with the
Belgian Beer Cafés around the world and it is one of the main sponsors of the
Belgian Beer Weekend in Japan.
